The walk traces the course of the River Douglas from its source on Winter Hill to its meeting with the River Ribble at Hesketh Bank. (36 miles)

The first three sections from Winter Hill as far as Parbold are being offered in addition to our regular programme in October and November using public transport. Details are provided below. Note that apart from the Appley Bridge to Parbold section, the whole walk is within the GMPTE area. There are no or very few stiles and the walk is virtually level or downhill. Walkers will be offered a copy of the book giving the full route as far as the Ribble so that they can complete the whole walk if they wish. Transport details are shown below
 

Walk 1:      Wed 8^th October:      Bob’s Smithy – Winter Hill – Horwich (5 miles)
Meet at Bob’s Smithy at 10.30 am.
Frequent bus service from Moor Lane/Marketplace (St Georges Road) 125/6 to Bob’s Smithy/Walker Fold Road with additional return option along Chorley New Road on 575.

or 125 Moor Lane 9.57am or 10.07am

Walk 2:     Wed 29^th October:     Horwich – Wigan (Tesco’s) (8 or 6 miles)
8 mile walkers: meet at the Crown Hotel Horwich at 10.30 am
6 mile walkers: stay on the 125 bus as far as the first bus stop after the M61 bridge to meet up with the others at 11.15/11.30 am

Outward journey – 125 Moor Lane 9.57 to Horwich (Crown Hotel)
Return Journey – 575 (frequent service via Horwich) or 715 (every 30 minutes via Westhoughton and Ladybridge) or train from Wigan Wallgate.

 Walk 3:     Wed 5^th November:      Wigan – Parbold or Appley Bridge (8 or 6 miles)
Meet outside Wigan Wallgate Railway Station at 10.30 am.

Outward journey – Bolton (Trinity St railway station) 10.02 am (Arrive Wigan Wallgate 10.20 am)

It will be necessary to buy a single ticket for the return journey from Parbold or Appley Bridge back to Wigan.
